Cortisol is a steroid that can release in the body different substances that prevent inflammation. This is why cortisol is used to treat different diseases. Cortisol is forbidden to those who are allergic to it and also to those suffering from fungal infections. Before using this in a certain treatment, patients should talk to their doctors about their medical history in order to avoid complications. Besides allergy to this steroid and fungal infections, there are also other conditions that cannot interfere with the usage of cortisol: liver problems, kidney diseases, tuberculosis, glaucoma, herpes, stomach problems, heart failure or high blood pressure. There is still no evidence if cortisol affects the pregnancy, but it is sure that it goes into the milk of a new mother and can be easily transmitted to a newborn, that is why new mothers should not use it.
The dosage of cortisol is prescribed by a doctor and only he can establish the best amount for his patients. For the best results of the treatment, the doctor may even alter the initial dose of cortisol. During a treatment that includes cortisol, people having it should stay away from sick people or from people with different infections. Also, several vaccines are banned while being treated with cortisol. These rules are important, because the body is weakened and it cannot react naturally while being treated with cortisol. Unfortunately, cortisol also have side effects, some serious and some that don’t need emergency treatment.
The easy secondary effects of cortisol treatments include mood changes, insomnia, acne, skin problems, sweating, slow wound healing, headaches, dizziness, stomach problems and changes in the shape of body fat. The appearance of the person being treated with cortisol may change because of the last. The other side effects are more serious and if those happen, the doctor should be called immediately. Many people have trouble seeing, develop allergies or their faces swollen. Severe depression is another important side effect of cortisol that must be treated right away. Pancreatitis and seizures are also critical side effects of this type of treatment and should be seen as an emergency situation and treated as soon as possible.
